  5. Here are directions for using the
  6. MMC64 with RR-Net to make backups of
  7. Commodore 64/128 disk libary. See
  8. below for  a link to get most of the
  9. files you'll need.

  11. NOTE:
  12. You will need to turn the C64 off and
  13. on after each successful image
  14. extraction. I am looking for a way to
  15. avoid this, so far nothing I have
  16. tried works. For this reason, it might
  17. be best to use a C128.
  18.  
  19. 1. Purchase a MMC64 and RR-Net from
  20. http://protovision-online.de (In
  21. Germany) The MMC64 fits into the
  22. cartridge slot of the C64 (or 128).
  23. The RR-Net attaches to the MMC64. It
  24. has an ethernet jack.
  25.  
  26. 2. Format SD-memory card, FAT 16 or 32
  27.  
  28. 3. Download "Warp Copy." The software
  29. contains 2 components. One is
  30. WARPCOPY06.prg which is to be run on
  31. the Commodore c64. The other component
  32. is warpcopy.exe which is to be run on
  33. a modern Windows PC.Together they work
  34. to perform a special kind of TCPIP-like
  35. network. I moved WARPCOPY06.prg to the
  36. SD card. I installed the PC version of
  37. the warpcopy program. You may want to
  38. add warpcopy to your firewall rules,
  39. allow data to pass through your
  40. ethernet card.  3.5 Get a copy of
  41. MMC64_Recovery_V110.zip. With this
  42. file you can perform a MMC64 Bios
  43. upgrade to V1.10. You will
  44. need this to make the TCPIP connection
  45. and to extract D64 files using the
  46. card. Unzip and install recovery.prg
  47. on your SD memory card. At this point
  48. you should have warpcopy06.prg and
  49. recovery.prg on the SD card.
  50.  
  51. 4. Set up your C-64 with a 1541 disk
  52. drive. Test everything to make sure
  53. your drive and cables work, etc.Insert
  54. a known-working diskette with a
  55. program(s) on it.
  56.  
  57. 5. Carefully attach the MMC64 with
  58. RR-Net and SD card installed into the
  59. cartridge slot of your C64. Carefully
  60. connect an ethernet cable to the RR-
  61. Net jack, and connect the other end of
  62. the cable to your PC. I have two
  63. ethernet cards in my PC to allow me to
  64. leave the systems connected
  65. indefinitely.

  67. 6. Activate the PC software. Change
  68. the IP address from 192.168.0.64 to
  69. 192.168.0.101 and hit enter. This is
  70. necessary for Windows XP because IP
  71. .64 is not available. Experiment for
  72. yourself.

  74. 7. Turn on the C64. If everything is
  75. working two things will happen
  76. 1) The RR-Net's right-hand light will
  77. shine, the left-hand light with blip
  78. every 3 seconds or so. If it does not,
  79. this is a clue that your network
  80. connection may not be active. I went
  81. into the "Network Connections" and
  82. turned on "allow other internet users
  83. to connect through this internet
  84. connection" in the advanced properties
  85. section. You should notice that your
  86. "Local area connection" icon will have
  87. activated if you've been successful.

  89. 2) The MMC64 Interface Bios 1.0
  90. screen will show.

  92. 8. From the interface menu, select F1
  93. -Start Filebrowser. Use the menus to
  94. locate and run recovery.prg. This
  95. program will upgrade your bios to
  96. 1.1. There has to be an easier way,
  97. but I can't find one. There in an bios
  98. upgrade file available, but I could
  99. not get it to work.

  101. 9. Resart the C64/1541 drive. Enter
  102. the MMC64 filebrowser again, this
  103. time start up WARPCOPY06.prg.
  104.  
  105. 10. Once in the program, hit N to
  106. change the IP address. Use Inst/Del
  107. to backspace over the "64" and replace
  108. with 101 so that your IP is
  109. 192.168.0.101, (port 6644) just like
  110. your PC's Warpcopy is using on the
  111. other end. In theory at this point you
  112. have created the connection between
  113. the two systems.

  115. 11. Verify that there is a commodore
  116. disk in the 1541. Using Warpcopy on
  117. the PC
  118. click on the "directory" button. The
  119. program should return a diretory of
  120. the
  121. diskette. The time to read a disk is
  122. about 5 seconds.
  123. You may wish to take a few minutes to
  124. reflect to yourself of the
  125. possibilities!
  126. 12. Lastly, click on the Read Image
  127. button. Warpcopy will ask for  a
  128. filename, and then perform a disk
  129. image extraction from the diskette in
  130. the 1541 drive to the destination file
  131. on your PC in about 20 seconds!  Here
  132. are some useful files, plus the
  133. start of what will be a massive D64
  134. library, more on that later.
